The Power of the Third Piece Rule

  third piece rule

The third piece rule transforms your outfit and elevates your style.  Your pants and top are the first and second piece.  The third piece is an extra outfit element such as a blazer or a statement accessory.

Blazer / Vest / Cardigan / Jacket

These pieces elevate a basic t-shirt or blouse.

knit blazer

Old Navy ($40) – this burgundy knit blazer totally pulls this outfit together.  It could also be worn over a blouse for work.  I bought a similar version at the Nordstrom anniversary sale and love it.

faux suede vest

Nordstrom ($170) – this vest is pricey but I think it will instantly make an outfit look cooler and more put together.  It can be worn over a sweater, blouse, or tee.  I might have to put this one in the cart.

open front cardigan

Gap (on sale now for $49) – I love this cardigan.  The color is beautiful and it upgrades your outfit from a basic t-shirt and jeans.  Also going in the cart!

duster coat

Misguided ($60) – Duster coats can upgrade any outfit.  They can be worn with anything from jeans to dresses and make your look pulled together and fashionable.

Scarf / Wrap

Scarves add a pop of pizzaz to your outfit.

paisley scarf

Nordstrom ($29) – this scarf adds so much color to your face and interest to a plain white tee or blouse.

fringe wrap

Nordstrom ($39) – this can be worn as a wrap or a scarf.  The neutral color will go with so much and will look especially great with a cream sweater or long sleeve t-shirt and tall boots.

Bold Accessory

A bold accessory is something that draws your eye to it like a statement necklace or a bold cuff.

tassel pendant necklace

BaubleBar ($42) – I love this necklace.  It adds a lot of interest to your outfit and can be worn with a lot.

Vera cuff

Nordstrom ($78) – this cuff is so cool and different.  It will definitely draw the eye and add impact to your look.

Hat

A hat is another item that can add a ton of interest to your outfit.  Pairing a floppy hot with tall boots, especially OTK ones, is a great look.

floppy hat

Target ($25)

I hope this helped explain the third piece rule and inspires you to make amazing outfits.

2017 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Haul

2017 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

I came, I saw, I shopped the 2017 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  I made a big order as soon as the sale opened Thursday morning.  Luckily it was right before the site crashed.  I might have been the reason for the crash – my bad.  Here is what I found on the front porch a couple days later:

I went to Nordstrom the next day with my friend to see some things in person and just have a fun girls day.  Seeing the items in person made me wish I would have ordered a few more things.  I did pick up some more things and am obsessed with a few more.  I already gave you my picks for the sale (see prior post).  This is my review of what I ordered, tried on, and saw at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  Welcome to my Nordstrom Anniversary Sale haul.

BLANKNYC Suede Moto Jacket ($126) – this is real suede and the quality is outstanding.  It’s a beautiful coat that runs small so size up.

Kensie Tweed Coat

Kensie Tweed Coat ($110) – a great fall/winter coat.  I love the color and the fit and had to take it home after I tried it on.  The sleeves are flared to accommodate bell sleeves.

Sweaters/Tops

BP cardigan

BP. Rib Stitch Cardigan ($32) – there are a lot of long cardigans in this sale but this is the least expensive.  It’s good quality for the price.  I got it in two colors and would size down.

BP. T-Strap Short Sleeve Tee ($15)

Blondo Waterproof Bootie ($100)

Argento Vivo Two-Tone Linear Fringe Earrings ($43)

Topshop cardigan

Topshop Colorblock Cardigan ($57) – I was so excited that they had this cardigan left in my store.  Size down on this one.  I will wear this with a white t-shirt, the below camel boots, and the below Kendall Scott Rae Pendant

Gibson bell sleeve pullover

Gibson Bell Sleeve Cozy Fleece Pullover ($40) – I saw this at the store and I loved it.  It’s very soft and the sleeves are flared but not overly so.  It’s a great piece to have in your closet for fall/winter.

Leith shawl collar cardigan

Leith Shawl Collar Cardigan ($53) – I love the color of this cardigan.  It looks great with this nude/blush bag from Sole Society.  The Argento Vivo jewelry in the sale is great and really makes an outfit.

Korah Sole Society Bag ($60)

Argento Vivo Stick Ball Earrings ($30)

Jeans

Frame jeans

Frame Split Hem Jeans ($180) – I love the slit down the center of these jeans.  The loose fit is very on trend.

Wit and Wisdom split hem jeans

Wit & Wisdom Split Hem Jeans ($45) – I included these in my last post but I wanted to give you a review of them after I tried them on at the store.  I loved them.  They have mesh panels inside of them to hold in your stomach and lift your booty.  They run big so size down.

I think the 2017 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is awesome this year and hope you all find some great pieces – I sure did.  A lot of things are sold out in certain sizes and colors.  Nordstrom constantly re-stocks everything.  My advice if the color or size you want is out of stock is to save it to your wishlist in another color or size available.  Then check daily to see if your size and color is back in stock.  Don’t forget the sale is open to everyone starting this Friday.  XOXO Michelle

The Latest Summer Fashion Trends

There are a few new trends that I’ve been noticing on Instagram and Pinterest: scarves, neon yellow shoes, and basket bags.

Scarves:

Wearing a scarf around a bun is very popular right now and I think it looks great for summer.  My hair is too short for a bun but I plan on wearing a scarf like a headband when it gets really hot and I want my bangs out of my face.  You can also tie a scarf around a ponytail.

Target ($10)

Target ($10)

Target ($10)

Another option is to just tie the scarf around your bag.

Neon Yellow Shoes:

Yellow shoes look very chic when worn with a minimal outfit.

Nordstrom ($50)

DSW ($25)

Basket Bags:

This Cult Gaia Ark bag is the one that started the basket bag craze.  Unfortunately it is sold out but I have included some similar choices below.

Cult Gaia Ark Bag

Zara ($60)

Dillards ($149)

EBags ($36 – after using 20% coupon code)

I hope everyone is having a good week in spite of all of the craziness going on in the world.

Hitting The Gym In Style

Trying on shorts and bathing suits has made me come to the realization that I need to hit the gym ASAP.  Nowadays you can go to and from the gym in style.  Here are some of my favorite workout gear finds.  They actually make me want to go to the gym so they must be cute.

Gap Fit ($60) – these leggings are so cool and I would wear them outside the gym too

Gap Fit ($30) – I love how this tank is open in the back to show off a colorful sports bra

Athleta ($49) – a strappy sports bra that would look great with the open back top above.  This also comes in bright colors.

Nordstrom ($129) – this Zella jacket is reversible and will look as good on the streets as it does at the gym

Nordstrom ($99) – backpacks are very on trend right now and once again can be worn in and out of the gym

Nordstrom ($19) – you need this after your workout when your hair is a hot mess

Some more great finds:

I’ll see you at the gym.  I’ll be the one in the cute outfit sitting at the cafe’ drinking my smoothie and watching the others work out.  XOXO Michelle

Tops to Update Your Spring/Summer Wardrobe

You can really spice up your spring/summer wardrobe by adding some new on trend tops.  You can wear these tops with your existing bottoms for some fresh new looks.

Nordstrom ($22) – I love how this top has a sewn-in side tuck that makes it very flattering.  It is definitely more special than a basic top.

Nordstrom ($35) – Everyone needs a cold shoulder top in their spring/summer wardrobe.  This one is in a flattering silhouette and a good price point.  It also comes in a pretty light purple color.

Loft ($45 – on sale right now) – This top is very trendy but can be worn with everything.  I especially like it with some colorful crop pants or a pretty printed skirt.

Banana Republic ($58 plus an additional 40% off right now) – This is one of the cutest blue striped shirts I have seen.  I love the origami like ruffles.  Like all the shirts in this post it is basic enough to go with a lot of things but special enough to make an outfit pop.

Nordstrom ($35) – I love the choker top trend.  This is such a pretty color and will look great with shorts or jeans for a night out.

You don’t have to buy a whole new wardrobe every season.  By adding in some new on trend pieces you can totally freshen up your looks.  XOXO Michelle

Why I am Obsessed with ASOS

ASOS ($49)

Hi – my name is Michelle and I have an ASOS obsession.  ASOS is great place to shop for all of the latest trends.  Their shoes are good quality and comfortable.  Their clothes are also good quality and fit true to size.  It’s hard not to have an ASOS obsession with their free shipping, free returns, no sales tax, low prices, and quality merchandise.  These are some of the reasons for my obsession.

TOPS:

ASOS ($52) – this is one of the cutest cold shoulder tops I have seen.

ASOS ($49) – I also love this cold shoulder top and would wear this with light distressed jeans.  If you are looking for some cute shoes to go with this outfit check out my post “Wear Now – Wear Later” from February  27th.  I featured two pairs of sandals and both are now on sale.

ASOS ($44) – wear this with white jeans and the sandals I mentioned above.  If you want a good white jean option I love the ones from my February 23rd post “Finds of the Week.”  As a bonus they are currently on sale.

DRESSES/ROMPERS:

ASOS ($46) – the A-line cut and off shoulder ruffle make this dress very cute and flattering

ASOS ($23) – this is definitely one of the best rompers I have found.  I appreciate the longer length and love the lace detailing.  I think this would be really cute with a longer length cardigan on chilly evenings.

ASOS ($49) – this dress has an interesting style and a flattering A-line cut

SHOES / ACCESSORIES:

ASOS ($38) – these will brighten up an outfit and will look great with the sundresses featured in this post

ASOS ($28) – I am loving the Bohemian vibe of these statement earrings

ASOS ($19)  – lastly are a couple clutches that will be fun additions to your summer wardrobe

ASOS ($19)

Now you know why I am obsessed with ASOS.  If you don’t already shop there, you really should check it out.  I apologize in advance for the time you are going to spend on the ASOS website but remember that is what you have me for.  XOXO Michelle

2017 Sunglass Trends

There’s several new styles of “sunnies” at the stores this season.  They are fun but since they are trendy I wouldn’t invest a lot of money in them.  Due to this, I have found some budget friendly options for you.

ROUND SUNGLASSES – these are most flattering on women with sharp, angular features with square or oblong shaped faces.  The round shape softens and balances your facial features.

ASOS ($16)

ASOS ($22) – I had to order these myself

COLORED LENSES – a big trend for spring/summer 2017.  They are a lot of fun but less versatile than traditional lenses so don’t invest a lot of money in them.  To make colored lenses a little more versatile you may want to stick with ones that have black rims.  I also think the black rims with the colored lenses is a very chic look.

Nordstrom ($24)

ASOS ($22)

CAT EYE SUNGLASSES – especially flattering on women who have pointy chins.  Women with heart and diamond shaped faces will get the most out of cat-eye sunglasses but they will also suit any face shape.

Nordstrom ($98)

ASOS ($19)

HAVANA SUNGLASSES  – another name for the classic tortoise shell pattern.  It’s a marbled effect, usually of two colors, but it can be more complex as in the case of the pink ones from Banana Republic below.

Nordstrom ($24)

Banana Republic ($98)

All of these sunglasses are so fun and at these prices you do not have to pick just one.  XOXO Michelle

Rufflemania

A  ruffle here – a ruffle there – ruffles are everywhere.  The styles to get a hold of are the ones that balance femininity with a little sleekness.  Think one shoulder tops, voluminous skirts, and asymmetrical dresses.  I found some great ruffled pieces to add to your spring/summer wardrobes including this beautiful dress above from ASOS ($68) that is begging to be worn for a special occasion.
